Politics?

Hey dude :)

So today was the day of my last exam: Philosophy and Social Studies. You did not know how relieved I felt when the entire exam was over. Freedom! But that's not the point of today's entry. While I was writing my Social Studies essay, I suddenly thought of the many issues Singapore has been going through for quite a few years. And I have ALOT of things to say. You didn't know how hard it was trying not write down all that I was thinking into my essay but I magically controlled myself. The question happened to be something about governing, which started the entire riot of thoughts. It was been with me for the entire day and I just had to spit it out.

I feel that the adults don't ever really consider what the Singaporean youths ever think about. Sure, we talked about the 2011 Elections of Singapore last year, but I don't think many adults bothered to ask what we think about the issues in Singapore. Aren't we Singaporeans too? Okay, I know some teenagers couldn't care less about 'matters of the adults' but I still want to say what I think about all these issues that has been plaguing Singapore and the government for quite some time. To avoid messiness, I shall talk separately about each issue.  Sorry, probably no pictures today :(

PAP
Singapore's ruling party: People's Action Party. Many people has recently been having quite a few issues with them. Saying that they aren't doing what they promised to do, their wallets are getting fatter while theirs had been getting thinner etc. Every problem that ever came up in Singapore: the 2011 Orchard Road floodings, the MRT breakdowns this year, the blame seemed to have been placed upon them. I am not being pro-PAP or anything, but seriously?! PAP has already down so much for us. Would we be enjoying MRT services and Orchard Road now if it hasn't been for them? Many people really do not understand how hard it is to govern a country: especially in 1965 after Malaysia kicked us out. Singapore, with little other resources besides its people and street fights breaking out frequently. Lee Kuan Yew brought Singapore to what it is today. I don't think anyone could have done a better job than he did. I really don't understand why people are completely thrashing the PAP without any thought for this.

Yes, they may be a little slow to adapt to the changes, they are only human. They had already done so much for us and people are acting as if PAP owes them something. PAP owes you nothing. Without them, you would not be here today. Okay, I can't quite express this properly. But essentially, I am saying that Singaporeans should have more respect for PAP. Many of them talk as if PAP owes them the world and they are always throwing them into bad light. I like to see THEM trying to govern Singapore. Singaporeans should get it in their heads that the government can't please everyone at the same time. And no matter what they do, there will always be people who are dissatisfied. Am I contradicting myself? I think I am...But anyways, the main point I want to get across is that PAP should get the credit they justly deserve, whatever the issues going on now. You may have issues with them now but don't thrash them to the point as if they had always be incompetent. You weren't there in the first decade after Singapore's independence to experience they'd went through.

Foreign Talent
Every country allows in foreigners. In Singapore, especially more so because of the little resources it has. I know in recent years the number of foreigners has been greatly increasing and the now the government are taking steps to tighten immigration laws to reduce the number of foreigners allowed in every year. What I really find hard to understand is that how much Singaporeans can complain about the foreigners. They have a million and one things to say about them. Like how they contribute to congestion in public transport, they came here to steal their jobs, their houses etc. Seriously?! Most of the foreigners that come here are poorer than us! They came here to find a job because they know that Singapore can offer a stable job which they can earn money and send back to their families.

I am not including the expats here. But the construction workers, cleaners and the domestic helpers. What jobs are they stealing from you? Are you willing to do their jobs? The average Singaporean today is far too educated to do any of these kind of jobs. Then why the heck are you people complaining?

So, now the expats are stealing your jobs is it? Obviously, if they have better qualifications than you, they will obviously get the job right? Instead of sitting around and complaining, DO something. If you badly wanted a job, you would not be deterred by this. And I think this applies to other countries too. As in, just as there are expats in Singapore, there is also Singaporean expats overseas too. If they go overseas to look for a job, why can't the expats too? And if Singaporeans expats are always getting the jobs overseas, what makes you think that the natives aren't also complaining about that too. I don't see how Singaporeans can go overseas and expect to get all the good jobs while the expats here are getting thrashed because of it. Honestly, when a Singaporean finds a job overseas, the country is very generous in giving you that job because there obviously will be a native with better qualifications than you and yet they are still giving you that job.

The same applies to universities. Many Singaporeans go overseas to study every year. And yet, foreigners are hated when they come to Singapore to study. Again, Singaporeans complain that they are stealing scholarships from the Singaporeans. Excuse me? Do you qualify for it? Unless you have the right qualifications for it then don't spout nonsense. Obviously, the foreigners qualified for the scholarship, no? Isn't it the same when Singaporeans go overseas to study? The university is giving you a scholarship to study when they could have rejected you and given it to one of the natives. What makes you think there isn't a native that is better qualified for the scholarship than you are? Okay, so in Singapore, you think you are better qualified for the scholarship than that foreigner. What gives you the right to go thrash them? You win some and you lose some. Just like how it is for that native. Am I making sense? -.- Like really, everyone living in Singapore is an immigrant. Your family hasn't been here for generations. It was either your parents or your grandparents that moved to Singapore to look for better jobs. Doesn't that make them once- foreigners too? Am I making any sense -.-

There are still many complex issues in Singapore that I shall not talk about. Especially those of housing, wages and the income gap. I don't fully understand these topics. And those that I have talked about today are just what I think and feel that is more black and white. For me, the wages thing is still a bit hazy and will always be hazy to me. I may sound a little immature and naive in this post, but I am only 14. These are just my own personal thoughts. Not meant to harm anyone in anyway.
